BOOK LAUNCH: ‘Happy Together: Bridging the Australia-China Divide’

MELBOURNE, 8 July 2022: ‘Happy Together: Bridging the Australia-China Divide’, the new account of two parallel lives from esteemed Australian and Chinese scholars Prof. David Walker AM and Prof. Li Yao was today launched at the Melbourne University.

According to the Chinese zodiac, both writers are “Roosters” – one born in Inner Mongolia and one in South Australia. Their stories illuminate contrasting national and family histories revealing the power of cross-cultural friendship.

In a discussion moderated by Asialink Senior Adviser and UNSW Emeritus Professor Louise Edwards, David Walker sat down to discuss his new book and why cross-cultural friendship is now more powerful than ever before.

Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC FASSA FAIIA Former Minister for Foreign Affairs; Former Chancellor, the Australian National University spoke about how the cold China-Australia relations can be moved towards warmth.

These included fewer complaints, China’s criticism based on Australia’s own national interests, accepting China’s aspirations, and working on common grounds…

The book launch was attended by eminent people from academia, and students wrapped up with a lively question-answer session. The ambiance of the book launch reflected concerns and the wish to bridge Australia’s icy relations with its biggest trading partner.
