“Blak, Loud and Proud” encapsulates the unapologetic celebration of Indigenous identity, empowering us to stand tall in our heritage and assert our place in the modern world. This theme calls for a reclamation of narratives, an amplification of voices, and an unwavering commitment to justice and equality. It invites all Australians to listen, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue, fostering a society where the wisdom and contributions of Indigenous peoples are fully valued and respected.”
MELBOURNE, 6 July 204: On the eve of the NAIDOC Week 2024, a firm commitment came about at the Wheelers Hill Library, with the Intercultural Social Book Club special event to stand once again with the First Nations voices, for justice and reconciliation. The gathering consisting of community guests, Monash Interfaith Gathering (MIG) and Book Club members, MP’s and music performers promoted understanding, unity, and respect for the First Nations people.
The event saw the MIG prayer, followed by MIG President Farough Derakshan’s Presidental address, and former Mayor Tina Samardjiya who said the First Nations will always remain so with our full support. Tina emphasised the need for reconciliation being the real one.
Mulgrave MP, Eden Foster said we all take indigenous rights seriously and are committed to them. Carina Garland, Federal MP also addressed the gathering. The indigenous musical presentations of the Yeng Gali Group added to the reconciliation ambience.
Our stories by Aunty Irene Norman and Aunty Daphne Milward, plus the indigenous book presentation ‘First Knowledge Series: Songlines’ by Margo Neale and Lynne Kelly presented by Heather Safstrom were the highlights of the program.
Anne Sedgley’s personal story “Butchers Creek, Metung’ was appreciated. And, indigenous books were presented to the library.
Intermingling and networking was intense amid the urge to enhance the First Nations by Keeping the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud. Information about the NAIDOC Week (7-14 July, 2024) can be accessed at – www.naidoc.org.au
