The boarding school drama, recently unveiled by Ananya Panday, started streaming on Prime Video across 240 countries and territories from March 14, 2024 with dubs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
Big Girls Don’t Cry, Prime Video’s original series, celebrates sisterhood and champions girl power. Set in the Vandana Valley Girls School, the series showcases the school’s archaic traditions and highlights how the students support each other through their endearing friendships. The series has been co-directed by Nitya Mehra, Sudhanshu Saria, Karan Kapadia, and Kopal Naithani, and each director adds a personal touch to the story from their real-life experiences at boarding schools.

The trailer gives a glimpse into the boarding life at the prestigious Vandana Valley, where a group of seven girls are gearing up for their final year in school with every intention of ruling the campus. An outsider, Kavya Yadav, walks onto the campus, hoping to make friends and ace life. Noor has her eyes set on the school captaincy, while Ludo is chasing down the sports captaincy position. As Roohi and JC push for their beauty business to succeed, Pluggy has grand plans of her own. Meanwhile, the rebel-poet Dia prepares to jump the boundary of the school wall before the class bell rings.
The cast and creators speak out
“I said yes to Big Girls Don’t Cry because I was drawn to the story, the setting, and the characters in it. As a rebellious teenager who never shied away from speaking my mind and questioning authority, it was such a kick to play Anita Verma. What I loved was that within the series, the characters develop a healthy sense of self and strive to overcome gender bias and stereotypes.,” says Pooja Bhatt, who features as Vandana Valley’s principal.
Vandanapu says, “Being able to play Ludo was truly the opportunity of a lifetime. Ludo challenged me, intimidated me, and in some ways even broke me. But Ludo also built me back up, inspired me, and reassured me. She’s a magical character – and I hope that for audiences she’s able to have even a fraction of the impact she had on me.”
Creator of the series and director, Nitya Mehra says, “I think school life in India, especially that of girls, is so underrepresented in storytelling, be it in Indian literature or cinema. Coming-of-age told through the eyes of an all girls boarding school in its most authentic avatar is what I was going for. Big Girls Don’t Cry isn’t just another girls boarding school drama, it is an insight into the lives, ideas, and feelings of young girls that are carving a path for themselves, finding their way into this world, and are doing so on their terms. Learning to overcome challenges and capitalise on opportunities, these girls are jet-setting on an enriching journey of self-discovery that will define who they are and what they’re made of. This series is a little homage from me to all the girls out there jostling to figure their identities. I want to celebrate girl gangs and sisterhood, and having Prime Video celebrate that with me was the perfect match.”
