Relatives of the missing persons protest in Karachi on Eid day

“Sindh’s political workers used to go missing before; now they are being killed,” says Basheeran, wife of the Pathan Zuhrani who has been missing since 2019. She was joined by many relatives of the missing persons in protest outside the Karachi Press Club on June 17, 2024.

KARACHI: On June 17, Eid day, families of missing nationalist political and social workers from Sindh, alongside the Sindh Sujagi Forum, set up a protest camp outside the Karachi Press Club. The protest aimed to demand the recovery of missing individuals who have been unaccounted for over the years.

Sorath Lohar, daughter of the slain nationalist leader Hidayat Lohar, participated in the protest. She was joined by other family members of missing persons, including wife and children of Pathan Zuhrani, who has been missing since 2019. Sorath Lohar said, “Sindh’s political workers used to go missing before; now they are being killed. The same has been done with my father Hidayat Lohar and Niaz Lashari.”

The families called on international organizations and human rights bodies to amplify their voices and aid in the recovery of their loved ones. Zuhrani’s wife, Basheeran said that her husband was taken from Karachi for the second time in 2019. “We are clueless about his whereabouts.”

Aqsa Dayo has been struggling for seven years to find her brother Insaf Daya. She shared her frustration and plea for assistance from global human rights organizations.

Sarang Joyo, President Sindh Sujag Forum, noted that many political activists from Sindh have been missing for over a decade. He referenced reports from reliable human rights organizations confirming forced disappearances, revealing that in 2023 alone, 175 political workers have been forcibly taken from Sindh.

The protest underscores a growing human rights crisis in Sindh, with families continuing to fight for justice and the safe return of their loved ones.
